Mąkowa Valley (Slovak: Monkova dolina) is a quiet, green gem tucked along the northern slopes of the Belianske Tatry — a place where a babbling stream, forest-clad hillsides and an open mountain meadow come together in perfect harmony. If you're looking for a taste of the Tatras without the crowds, this valley is well worth the detour.
The valley stretches from Ptasiowska Rówianka (approx. 940 m a.s.l.) down to its junction with Zdziarska Valley (approx. 870 m a.s.l.). The right-hand slopes belong to the Belianske Tatry, while the left side forms part of Magura Spiska. Several side valleys — Dolina do Regli, Dolina Kępy and Jaworzynka Bielska — branch off into the mountains, offering quieter detours for explorers. At the heart of the valley lies the spacious Mąkowa Meadow, belonging to the village of Ždiar. In summer it is lush and flower-filled; in autumn the surrounding forests turn a brilliant gold. The well-maintained Bielska Droga path runs along the valley floor, making walking here easy and pleasant throughout the season.
How to get thereThe valley takes its name from the Monka family, who settled here around 1885 — their legacy lives on in the Slovak name 'Monkova dolina' and the nearby hamlet known as 'Do Mączków'.
