Bijele i Samarske stijene is one of the most spectacular nature reserves in Gorski Kotar - a labyrinth of white limestone rocks that look like they belong on another planet. This is a place for those seeking more than an ordinary hike - it's a genuine adventure among bizarre karst rock formations.

The landscape is shaped by numerous rock blocks and towers, covered with fir, spruce and beech forest growing right out of the stone crevices. In summer, the rocks contrast beautifully with the green forest, creating unforgettable views, while in winter the whole area is blanketed in snow, making it look even more rugged and mysterious. Samarske stijene reaches 1302 m, while Bijele stijene to the west rises to 1335 m. The entire area is a true paradise for lovers of geology and wild nature.

How to get there

• Entering the reserve requires good physical preparation - the terrain is demanding and rocky
• A popular starting point is the Ratkovo sklonište shelter, built in 1952 by mountaineers from PDS Velebit in Zagreb

Practical information

• The area has been under strict reserve protection since 24 January 1985, covering 1175 ha
• Bears, weasels, dormice and martens live in the reserve - stay cautious and leave no trace
• Rare mountain plants such as edelweiss, alpine thistle and other species grow here
