Snježnik (1505 m) is the second highest peak in Risnjak National Park and, for many, the more accessible and rewarding companion to its taller neighbor Veliki Risnjak. Its wide, grassy summit and relatively gentle approach have made it the most popular spot for ski touring in Croatia.
The name Snježnik comes from the Croatian word for snow, snijeg, and it's easy to see why - snow lingers here well into spring, drawing ski tourers from across the region. In summer, the open, grassy peak offers sweeping views and a peaceful, uncrowded atmosphere compared to busier trails elsewhere in the park. A mountain lodge, Albaharijev dom, sits right on the summit, making it a natural stopping point for a rest or a hot drink before continuing on.
How to reach the summitNearby lies Guslica, home to an eerie abandoned Yugoslav army complex now slowly reclaimed by nature - an unexpected detour for those curious about the region's more recent history.
