Rising to 2420 metres in the Tux Alps, Wanglspitze offers a quiet contrast to the buzzing ski slopes it sits above. Perched on the northwestern edge of the Penken ski area, this peak rewards summer hikers with sweeping alpine views once the winter crowds have gone home.

The mountain forms part of the western valley flank of the Zillertal, about seven kilometres west-northwest of Mayrhofen. In winter, the summit hums with activity thanks to the cable car connecting it to the ski circus, while in summer it transforms into a peaceful hiking destination surrounded by typical Tyrolean alpine pastures and huts. Expect wide panoramas over the Zillertal valley and the surrounding peaks of the Tux Alps.

How to reach the summit

• Penken (upper station) — hiking trail via Wanglalm, approx. 2 hours, easy to moderate

Practical information

• The summit hosts the upper station of the 150er Tux cable car, which operates only during the winter season
• In summer the peak can only be reached on foot, as the cable car does not run
• The trail passes by the Wanglalm, a good spot for a rest
