The Lizumer Reckner is the highest peak of the Tux Alps, rising to 2,886 metres in the heart of Tyrol, southeast of Innsbruck. It's a rewarding goal for hikers wanting a taste of alpine climbing, with the final push to the summit involving easy scrambling partly secured as a via ferrata.

The landscape here is rugged and dramatic — the summit block is made of serpentinite embedded in radiolarite, surrounded by geologically diverse dolomite breccias and Jurassic rock. Below the summit lie stone runs, remnants of a former rock glacier, where traces of dead ice can still be found. In summer the views stretch to the neighbouring Naviser Reckner and along the ridge toward the Lizumer Sonnenspitze and Tarntaler Köpfe, while in winter the mountain becomes a popular ski touring destination.

• Navis valley, from the Naviser Hütte (1,767 m) — marked trail, moderate to demanding
• Navis valley, from the Peeralm (1,663 m) — alternative starting point
• Schmirn valley, from the hamlet of Obern — marked trail
• Tuxertal, from the Junsbergalm (1,984 m) or from Hintertux — marked trail
• Wattener Lizum, from the Lizumer Hütte (2,019 m) — the most important base, also possible as a winter ski tour

Practical information

• The mountain lies within the Lizum Walchen military training area, so ascents are occasionally banned — check accessibility before setting out
• The final climb requires easy scrambling, partly secured as a via ferrata

Interesting fact: the peak forms a striking pair with its western neighbour, the 2,824 m Naviser Reckner, the two summits standing like twins above the Navis valley.
