Rising to 3476 m, the Olperer is a striking pyramid-shaped peak and the main summit of the Tuxer Kamm ridge, widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and independent-looking mountains in the Central Eastern Alps. Its bold profile makes it a favorite among hikers seeking a true summit view.

The mountain dominates its neighbors thanks to its isolated, pointed form, and the panorama from the top is one of the best in the Zillertal Alps. Glaciers wrap around the summit structure on all sides: the Tuxer Ferner and Olpererferner to the north, the Große Riepenkees to the southeast, and the shrinking Unterschrammachkees to the southwest. Summer brings rocky ridges and old glacier terrain, while winter transforms the mountain into a serious ski touring objective.

How to reach the summit

• Schlegeisspeicher (parking at the dam) — marked trail to the Olpererhütte, about 2 hours, easy; then roughly 4 more hours via Grohmann's classic route through the Riepenkar and the southeast ridge (Riepengrat), demanding (UIAA I-II, very exposed)
• Wildlahnerscharte — via the north ridge, about 350 m of climbing (UIAA II-III), reached from the Geraer Hütte, the Tuxer Fernerhaus, or through the Hintertuxer Gletscher ski area

Practical information

• The Olpererhütte (2388 m), in operation since 1881, serves as the main base for the ascent
• The crux chimney section on the southeast route is fitted with iron rungs, though a personal belay is recommended
• The north ridge can be icy even in midsummer and includes bolted sections for extra security
• Winter ascents are also done as ski tours, but require confident crampon climbing on mixed terrain

It was here on the Olperer in 1881 that four mountaineers are said to have first exchanged the greeting 'Berg Heil!', which later became a traditional alpine salutation.
