Vysoká (545 m a.s.l.) is a modest but atmospheric summit in the Lusatian Mountains, straddling the border area of northern Bohemia. It's a place where fossil hunters and history buffs alike find something to explore, with an international trail crossing right over its top.

The forested slopes of Vysoká have a rugged, stony character, shaped by sandstone scree that has drawn paleontologists since the early 20th century. Concrete bunkers from the interwar Czechoslovak fortification line dot the summit area, forming a continuous chain along the border ridge. In summer the woods offer welcome shade, autumn brings a quiet, misty mood to the hillside, and in winter the trail is peaceful and rarely crowded — ideal for those seeking solitude.

How to reach the summit

• Jítravské sedlo (saddle) — red trail, short and easy approach
• From the village of Jítrava via Bílé kameny — red trail, continuing toward Horní Sedlo, moderate difficulty

Practical information

• An abandoned quarry in Cenomanian sandstone and conglomerate lies on the southwestern slope, known for its fossil finds
• Below the summit is the Bílé kameny natural monument (also called Elephant Rocks) — unique rounded sandstone formations
• Numerous bunkers from the First Czechoslovak Republic fortification system survive on the summit and slopes
• Nearest bus stop: Rynoltice, Jítrava on road I/13

The pale, bulbous rock formations at Vysoká's foot owe their striking shape and colour to kaolinite mixed into the sandstone — a genuine geological curiosity of the region.
