Toblacher Pfannhorn rises to 2663 m above the town of Dobbiaco (Toblach), right on the border with Austria. This peak carries a layer of history along with its views - abandoned pre-WWII bunkers still dot its slopes, remnants of a border once fiercely contested.

The landscape here, part of the western Tauern Alps, feels wild and open - grassy ridges, rocky outcrops, and sweeping panoramas toward the Dolomites and the Austrian Alps. In summer the trail winds through alpine meadows in bloom, while in winter the terrain can be prone to avalanches, so timing your visit matters. The summit view is one of the finest around Dobbiaco.

• Kandellen-Candelle — trail no. 25, via Bonner Hütte, moderate difficulty

Practical information

• Near the summit stand historic bunkers of the Vallo Alpino, built before WWII in a position designed to stay hidden from enemy observation
• In February 2009 an avalanche struck this area fatally, so extra caution is advised in winter conditions
• Bonner Hütte offers a resting point along the way

The peak was named Monte Toblach in the 1915 Treaty of London, which anticipated the Austro-Italian border later established after World War I.
