Sveti Jure is the crown of the Biokovo mountain range and one of Croatia's highest peaks, rising to 1,762 metres above the Adriatic coast near Makarska. This is a place where dramatic karst terrain meets sweeping sea views, and on clear days you can spot the Apennine Mountains in Italy, some 252 km away.
The summit landscape is rugged and rocky, almost lunar in character, offering a striking contrast to the turquoise waters far below. Winds can be fierce here, and snow lingers for much of the year, making Sveti Jure one of the coldest spots in Croatia with a mean annual temperature of just 3.9°C. At the top stands a chapel dedicated to Saint George, the highest church in Croatia, alongside a television tower whose antenna technically makes this the country's true highest point.
How to reach the summitInterestingly, the original stone chapel was demolished in 1965 during the tower's construction and rebuilt in 1968 using concrete with a stone facing — a small but telling piece of this mountain's layered history.
