Straßberg (538 m) is a forested peak in the eastern Zittau Mountains, home to one of the region's most memorable viewpoints — the Fuchskanzel, reached via a steel bridge spanning a rocky gap. This is a destination for hikers who enjoy a touch of adventure along with their panoramas.

The summit itself, crowned by a sandstone rock, is thickly wooded and offers no views. The real reward lies at nearby Fuchskanzel, where a sweeping panorama opens over the Zittau Basin, the towns of Zittau and Grottau, the villages of Hartau and Görsdorf, Lake Christinasee, and the Turów mine and power plant. To the east, the view stretches across the Weißbachtal valley to the ridgeline of Hahnberg, Lindenberg and Pfaffenstein. The northern and eastern slopes are studded with impressive rock formations, forming one of the three climbing areas of the Zittau Mountains — wild and rugged, especially atmospheric in autumn mist.

How to reach the summit

• Lückendorf — via the S 132 road (Gabler Straße) toward Forsthaus Lückendorf and the Lückendorfer Pass, then on foot eastward, moderate difficulty
• Alternatively from the Weißbachtal valley, via Kieferngrund, passing the ruins of Karlsfried castle and the Klothildenstein

Practical information

• Fuchskanzel is accessible only via a steel bridge crossing a rock crevasse — not suited for those uneasy with heights
• The historic 1864 triangulation point 'Station 39 Strassberg' still stands atop Fuchskanzel
• The rocks around Straßberg, including the Uhusteine, are a popular climbing area governed by Saxon climbing rules

At the mountain's foot, near the Heideturm tower, lie the remains of the medieval Karlsfried castle. The nearby Uhustein rock saw its first recorded ascent back in 1875, making it a birthplace of rock climbing in the Zittau Mountains.
