Heideberg (549.4 m a.s.l.) is a forested peak in the eastern Zittau Mountains that trades panoramic views for a rich dose of history and geology. Its summit is crowned by the 'Nummerstein', a massive sandstone rock formation, with numerous smaller rock outcrops scattered across the slopes below.

This is not a dramatic, view-heavy mountain — instead it offers a quiet, wooded character with paths winding past old millstone quarries and sandstone formations. The northern slope holds the 'Schwarzes Börnel' spring, while the King John spring lies at the northeastern foot. In autumn the forest turns a warm palette of colours, and in winter the trails are peaceful and largely deserted, making for a reflective walk through the woods.

How to reach the summit

• Hikers' car park at Stoß — Neue Heidebergweg, trail leads around the summit to Forsthaus Lückendorf, easy
• Haberkornweg from Alte Gabler Straße via Napoleonschmiede and Binis Hüttl in the Pfaffenbach valley to Zigeunerberg
• Stadtweg — western route through the Pfaffenbach valley

Practical information

• The summit itself offers no view — this is a hike for history and forest lovers rather than panoramas
• The historic millstone quarry on the northwestern slope is accessible with information boards as part of a local heritage trail
• The cave-like Napoleonschmiede is worth a detour — according to tradition it served as a forge during the Napoleonic Wars

At the eastern foot, on the Stoß, sits a charming rest stop called the Mühlsteintisch — a table made from an old millstone, carved with the year 1848, marking the completion of the new switchback road.
