Spitzstein is a charming peak in the Chiemgau Alps, straddling the border between Bavaria and Tyrol. Its rocky summit is crowned with a cross and a small chapel, and remarkably, the German-Austrian border runs right through the highest point - a rare spot where you can stand in two countries at once.

From the top, hikers are treated to a wide panoramic view over the Alpine foothills and the surrounding peaks of the Chiemgau Alps and Bavarian Prealps, with the Central Alps visible on clear days. The terrain combines open grassy slopes with patches of forest and scattered rocks, making the ascent varied and scenic. In summer the trail is popular with hikers of all levels, while in winter the mountain takes on a quiet, snow-covered character.

• Alternative approaches start in Innerwald or Erlerberg

• A via ferrata crosses the north face (about 100 m long with 60 m of steel cable), renovated and reopened in July 2017 by the Bergfreunde München section of the German Alpine Club - category B, no major difficulties, climbed at one's own risk
• The easier standard route through the south flank can be steep and slippery when wet
• The summit lies exactly on the German-Austrian border

Just below the summit cross, built into the slope, stands a small chapel dating from the early 20th century - a lovely spiritual touch on this border peak.
