Petersberg, also called Kleine Madron, is a modest peak in the Bavarian Prealps rising above Flintsbach am Inn. It's a place where scenery meets history - the summit hosts a small church dedicated to St. Peter, a welcoming inn, and traces of a medieval Benedictine monastery.

The walk up leads through the calm, wooded terrain typical of the Mangfall Mountains, passing the romantic ruins of Unter-Falkenstein and Ober-Falkenstein (Rachelburg) castles along the way. In summer the forest path offers shade and glimpses of the Inn valley below, while in winter the snow-covered forest road becomes a favorite sledding run for families. The whole area has a relaxed, historic charm - a great choice for an easy hike with a cultural twist.

• Flintsbach am Inn — forest road, about 1 hour, easy difficulty
• The trail passes the ruins of Unter-Falkenstein and Ober-Falkenstein (Rachelburg) castles

Practical information

• The summit features an inn and the Church of St. Peter
• Along the footpath leading up from the forest road stand 13 stone pillars with bronze reliefs by sculptor Josef Hamberger, depicting Christ and the Apostles - the so-called Apostelweg ends at the church as its 14th station
• Archaeological excavations by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich have researched the remains of the St. Peter am Madron monastery in the area

Worth knowing: in the Middle Ages, the hill belonged to a monastery founded by the Counts of Falkenstein - traces of this history can still be spotted along the trail today.
