Naunspitze is a 1633 m peak in the Kaisergebirge range in Austria, rising in the northern section known as the Zahmer Kaiser (Tame Kaiser). It may not be the tallest summit around, but its dramatic north face and sweeping views over the Inn Valley make it a memorable stop on any Kaisergebirge tour.

Seen from the west, Naunspitze is the first independent peak of the main ridge - and it shows. To the south, the mountain slopes down gently through scree and rock, while to the north it plunges in a steep rock wall that towers dramatically above the Inn Valley near Ebbs. This contrast between the gentle southern approach and the wild northern precipice gives the peak real character. In summer, hikers are rewarded with wide views across the Kaisergebirge, while in winter the grassy slopes and rocky drops turn into a striking snow-covered landscape that demands extra caution.

How to reach the summit

• Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte (from the southwest) - marked trail, approx. 45 minutes, easy
• From Petersköpfl - approx. 20 minutes, easy
• Southwest flank variant - easy climbing (grade I, with sections of II)

Practical information

• Several alpine climbing routes from UIAA grade III lead up the north and west faces - suitable only for experienced climbers
• To the east, separated by a small notch, rises Petersköpfl (1745 m) - the two peaks can easily be combined in one outing
