Schlechteberg (485 m a.s.l.) is a dormant volcano rising quietly above the town of Ebersbach-Neugersdorf in the Lusatian Highlands of Saxony, right on the German-Czech border. Like its neighbours Kottmar and Löbauer Berg, it owes its character to ancient volcanic forces — and today it rewards visitors with mixed woodland walks, a charming historic mountain lodge, and an alpine garden that feels wonderfully out of place at this modest elevation.

The summit ridge runs northwest to southeast, following a broad dyke of nepheline basanite whose blocks cover the three steep flanks of the hill. The contrast between the warm, dry southern slopes and the cool, moist northern face creates a striking variety in vegetation. In winter, a ski tow operates on the north slope, while the rest of the year the forest is peaceful and ideal for a relaxed half-day outing. The views that once stretched from the Giant Mountains with Sněžka all the way to the Jizera Mountains and Zittau Hills were legendary — though the observation tower was demolished in January 2020.

• Ebersbach-Neugersdorf (federal road B96, parking at 'Wasserhäuschen' near the summit) — access road, easy — the car park sits just below the top, making this accessible for all fitness levels.

• Car park at Wasserhäuschen is reachable directly from the B96 federal road via a dedicated access lane.
• The historic Humboldtbaude lodge (built 1912) sits near the summit alongside an alpine garden of around 2,500 m². The mountain restaurant has been closed since 2009; the town is seeking a new investor for the site.
• A ski tow on the north slope has been in operation since 1970 — available in winter season.
• The former 22-metre observation tower with panoramic views towards the Krkonoše, Jizerské hory and Zittau Mountains was demolished in January 2020.

The Humboldtverein — a local scientific society inspired by Alexander von Humboldt — was founded here in 1861, and its members spent over 150 years researching and protecting this modest but fascinating little peak.
