Beckenberg is a modest but distinctive summit in the Eastern Upper Lusatian Mountains, rising to 408.8 m above sea level right above the town of Eibau. Despite its low elevation, the mountain drops steeply on three sides, rewarding hikers with unexpectedly wide views over the surrounding hills and the Landwasser valley.

The landscape here is classic gentle Upper Lusatian countryside — rolling fields separated by narrow saddles from neighboring basanite hillocks. In summer the surrounding farmland gives it a peaceful, rural feel, while in autumn and winter mist often rises from the valley below, wrapping the hill in an atmospheric haze. This is a low-key destination, perfect for a relaxed family walk away from crowds.

How to reach the summit

• Eibau (on road B96) — paved road leading directly to the summit, approx. 30–45 minutes, easy difficulty
• Alternative approach via narrow saddles connecting Beckenberg to the neighboring Kühnelsberg

Practical information

• A mountain inn, Beckenbergbaude, built in 1905, still operates at the summit today
• A former basanite quarry lies on the western slope — an interesting geological feature
• The old local heritage museum relocated to Eibau in 2012; only the historic buildings remain on the hill

The mountain's name likely comes from a former windmill known as the Becker- or Bäckerberg mill, which operated here from 1759 to 1900 and even supplied water to the local Eibau brewery.
