Krásný Les Chateau is a decaying, abandoned late-Baroque building that has been quietly crumbling for decades - and that's precisely what draws visitors who are interested in places with real, weighty history rather than polished tourist attractions. This is not a restored museum piece but an authentic ruin carrying dark memories from the Second World War.

The L-shaped building stands in a quiet corner of the Ore Mountains landscape, surrounded by fields and gentle hills. Collapsed ceilings, a peeling facade and an eerie silence give the place an atmosphere far stronger than any restored heritage site. In autumn and winter, when mist settles over the surrounding countryside, the chateau takes on an especially melancholic character.

How to get there

• Krásný Les is a hamlet of the municipality of Petrovice in the Ústí nad Labem Region - the easiest approach is by local road leading into the village, followed by a short walk to the chateau
• No special preparation is needed - this is a gentle countryside walk rather than a mountain hike

Practical information

• The building is uninhabited, dilapidated and privately owned - visits are limited to viewing from the outside
• The facade still preserves a Baroque portal, family coats of arms and a German quotation from the Book of Psalms
• Since 2018 the chateau has belonged to a new owner who plans to renovate it and create an exhibition on its history

During the war the chateau served as a collection camp for elderly Jewish residents of the Ústí region - more than a hundred people passed through the Sammellager Schönwald, many of whom did not survive. This history gives a visit here a far deeper meaning than an ordinary walk past a ruin.
