Rising some 150 metres above the Gottleuba valley, Augustusberg is a modest but rewarding peak in the Eastern Ore Mountains — a place where easy walking meets sweeping views and a slice of 19th-century history.

The mountain's slopes are gentle and forested, while the summit itself sits on a cap of grey, iron-rich sandstone resting atop ancient granite and gneiss. In summer the hilltop buzzes with visitors drawn to its mountain hotel, while quieter autumn and winter days bring mist drifting over the valley below. On clear days the view stretches across the Elbe valley all the way to the Dresden TV Tower, and eastward over the Gottleuba Reservoir to the Geisingberg, Kahleberg and the ruined castle of Frauenstein.

How to reach the summit

• Bad Gottleuba — short ascent, approx. 30-40 minutes, easy difficulty
• A short access road (branching off the S173 Pirna–border state road) leads almost to the top, making it accessible even for casual visitors
• The long-distance Eisenach-Budapest mountain trail also passes over the summit

Practical information

• A mountain hotel (Berghotel) operates on the summit, offering food and accommodation
• The former wooden lookout tower no longer exists — it was dismantled after WWII due to disrepair
• A memorial stone from 1963 marks the site, commemorating the 1813 Wars of Liberation battles fought nearby

Fun fact: in August and September 1813, fierce fighting connected to the Battle of Kulm took place around Augustusberg — a plaque on the nearby transformer building has recorded this since 1913.
