Vartenberk is a Renaissance chateau rising above the town of Stráž pod Ralskem, built from the remains of an original Gothic castle. Its name comes from the German Warte auf dem Berg — watch on the hill — and for centuries this hilltop stronghold has done exactly that, keeping watch over the surrounding landscape. It's a fascinating stop for anyone drawn to castles with a turbulent, dramatic past.

The chateau sits on Zámecký vrch, wrapped in woodland managed almost like a game park, dominated by native trees — oaks, maples, limes, hawthorns, plus horse chestnuts and lilacs. The views aren't sweeping, but the atmosphere is heavy with history: Hussite occupation, the ravages of the Thirty Years' War, wartime imprisonment, and decades of Soviet military use that culminated in a devastating fire in 1987. Visiting in autumn or winter, when mist settles over the hill, brings out the site's melancholic, storied character best.
