Run as a public institution of the Moravian-Silesian Region, the museum spans no fewer than 5 branches spread across the area: the Archeopark in Chotěbuz, the historic Kotula's Cottage in Havířov-Podlesí, the Museum of the Triple Border in Jablunkov, the Memorial of the Životice Tragedy in Životice, and the Historic Building in Český Těšín itself. Each branch tells a different chapter of regional life, from prehistoric settlements to wartime memory.

Founded in 1948 by local teacher and draughtsman Ladislav Báča, the museum continues a tradition that actually stretches back to 1802, when priest Leopold Jan Šeršník opened what is today the oldest museum in Moravia and Silesia just across the river in Cieszyn.
