Grabštejn Castle is a hidden gem on the Czech-German border — a Gothic fortress from the 13th century that was transformed into a splendid Renaissance château, and today stands as one of the finest historic monuments in northern Bohemia. Perched above the Lusatian Neisse valley near Hrádek nad Nisou, it offers history, beauty, and a wonderfully atmospheric setting all in one.

The castle rises on a wooded hill above the village of Chotyně, commanding lovely views over the river valley and surrounding forests. The complex includes an upper castle with Renaissance courtyards decorated with sgraffito rustication, and a lower New Castle at the foot of the hill, surrounded by a park filled with rare tree species. Spring and summer bring lush greenery that frames the stone walls perfectly, while autumn transforms the park into a tapestry of warm colours.

The absolute highlight is the Renaissance Chapel of St Barbara, decorated with extraordinary frescoes painted between 1566 and 1586 — most likely by Heinrich Bocksberger, a Salzburg-born artist also credited with the famous 'Small Lenten Cloth' in nearby Zittau. The chapel is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance and early Mannerist art in Bohemia.
