Perched dramatically on a phonolite hill at 604 metres above sea level, Bezděz Castle is one of the most striking Gothic landmarks in the Czech Republic. Whether you are drawn by its medieval silhouette, its sweeping views, or its extraordinary history, a visit here feels like stepping into another century.

The hilltop setting gives the castle an almost fairytale quality. In spring and summer the forested slopes are lush and green, while autumn transforms the surrounding landscape into a blaze of colour. On a clear day, the views from the castle tower stretch across the Bohemian countryside in every direction — truly worth the climb. The romantic ruins have inspired poets and composers for generations, lending Bezděz an atmosphere that goes well beyond a typical sightseeing stop.

Both the poet Karel Hynek Mácha and the composer Bedřich Smetana were inspired by Bezděz — and once you see it rising above the trees, it is easy to understand why. The young Wenceslaus II was once imprisoned here as a child, yet returned as king to build the chapel that still stands today.
