Frýdštejn is a beautifully atmospheric castle ruin perched on sandstone rocks near Malá Skála in the Czech Paradise region. Its striking tower, rising from the highest crag, commands sweeping views over the Jizera river valley — making it a rewarding destination for hikers and history lovers alike.

The landscape around Frýdštejn is quintessential Bohemian Paradise: sandstone cliffs, dense forests and winding valleys create a fairy-tale setting in every season. Spring brings wildflowers along the trails, summer offers lush greenery, and autumn transforms the hillsides into a blaze of colour. Even in winter the ruins take on a romantically mysterious character. The castle's main tower — 15 metres tall, 9 metres in diameter, with walls 2 metres thick — is its best-preserved feature, and on a clear day you can spot Bezděz Castle in the distance.

• From Malá Skála railway station (line 030 Liberec–Pardubice) — red trail, approx. 3 km, moderate difficulty. The route passes through the Pantheon viewpoint along the Vranov ridge — the most scenic approach.
• From the village centre of Frýdštejn / bus stop 'Frýdštejn, náves' — the castle is less than 1 km to the east, easy difficulty.

• Access to the tower is via a metal staircase on the outside wall — the original entrance was 6–7 metres above courtyard level.
• The castle has been open to visitors since 1892, when a local beautification society purchased and secured the ruins.
• The castle is owned by the municipality of Frýdštejn.

Frýdštejn has starred in Czech cinema too — it served as a filming location for 'The Secret of the Castle in the Carpathians' and other productions, adding a touch of movie magic to its already rich medieval story.
