Kozákov (745 m a.s.l.) is the highest peak of the Kozákov Ridge and the entire Bohemian Paradise — a place where volcanic geology, centuries of history, and sweeping views come together in one very rewarding day out. This is a mountain with real personality: semi-precious gemstones hidden in the rock, prehistoric caves, a historic mountain hut, and a 40-metre lookout tower waiting for you at the top.

The landscape here is wonderfully varied. The western slopes are draped in spruce forest with oak and birch, while the summit area opens up into meadows with wide skies. The gentler eastern side contrasts with the steeper, rockier west, where sandstone towers and cliff faces add drama to the scenery. From the lookout tower's viewing platform at 24 metres, on a clear day you can see the Bohemian Paradise, Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), Jizerské hory, Lužické hory, Ještěd, Orlické hory, and even the distant Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. Every season has its appeal: spring wildflowers on the summit meadows, lively summer days, a blaze of autumn colour in the forests, and peaceful winter walks.

• By car — a paved road leads directly to the summit with a parking area. The easiest option, great for families.
• Red or green hiking trail — both pass over the summit, connecting it to surrounding villages. Difficulty: easy to moderate.
• Yellow or blue trail — both start at the summit and head westward, offering varied loop options.

• Riegrova chata (Rieger's hut) at the summit has a restaurant — fully renovated and reopened in 2003, perfect for a meal or drink after your walk.
• On the south-western slope, Votrubcův lom quarry hosts a small Museum of Precious Stones — for a small fee you can borrow tools and dig for semi-precious stones yourself.
• Since 2002, Kozákov is part of the Bohemian Paradise Protected Landscape Area (CHKO).
• The lookout tower is open to visitors and also serves as a telecommunications mast.
• Kozákov is a popular paragliding spot.

People have been drawn to Kozákov since prehistoric times, collecting agates, jaspers, amethysts and crystals from the volcanic rock — some of which ended up decorating medieval churches. That sense of discovery is still very much alive here today.
