Standing on a plinth in the centre of Baligród, a small Bieszczady village steeped in turbulent history, the T-34/85 tank is a striking open-air monument that brings the wartime and post-war story of this region vividly to life. It is the kind of place where history stops being a textbook entry and becomes something you can reach out and touch.

Baligród sits in the valley of the Hoczewka river, surrounded by the gentle forested hills of the Bieszczady Mountains. The village has preserved its old market-town layout, with a wide rectangular square, and the tank stands as part of the local commemorative heritage. In autumn, when the surrounding forests blaze with colour and mist drifts through the valleys, the atmosphere here takes on a quietly melancholic quality. In summer it is peaceful and green — a perfect short stop on a longer Bieszczady road trip.

An interesting footnote: the original T-70 tank that stood here was the last surviving example of its type in Poland, and it was only moved to Poznań in 1975 thanks to the initiative of officers from the Higher Officers' School of Armoured Forces.
