Rákóczi–Bánffy Castle in Gilău is one of those hidden gems where centuries of Transylvanian history quietly linger — from a medieval bishop's fortress to a Renaissance noble residence. Surrounded by an expansive park of over 11 hectares, it makes for a charming stop that blends a gentle walk with a dose of history.

The area around Gilău sits at the gateway to the Apuseni Mountains, so the landscape is one of soft hills, valleys, and the mature greenery of the castle park. In summer the park is shaded and alive with birdsong, in autumn the foliage turns golden and red, and in winter the building takes on a stark, atmospheric silhouette against snowy hills. It's a lovely spot for an easy stroll before or after a longer day in the mountains.

Fun fact: the original fortress dates back to after 1439, built on the orders of Bishop Gheorghe Lepes, and was transformed into a Renaissance-style castle around 1500 — between 1599 and 1601 it was even held by Michael the Brave.
