Kendeffy Castle in Sântămăria Orlea is one of those places where Transylvanian aristocratic history feels wonderfully alive. Built in 1782 by the wealthy Kendeffy family, it later gained its striking neo-Gothic tower and remains one of the most eye-catching landmarks in the Land of Hațeg. Since the 1980s the castle has served as a hotel, so you can actually stay the night inside a piece of history.

The setting is gentle and pastoral, at the foot of the Retezat Mountains, surrounded by an English-style park once designed by landscaper Wilhelm Klensky and filled with rare tree species. In spring and summer the grounds are lush and green, autumn brings golden, atmospheric light to the tower and facade, and winter dusts the neo-Gothic silhouette with snow — a lovely quiet base after a day exploring the mountains nearby.
