The Rechenberg Castle Ruins are the atmospheric remains of a medieval hilltop fortress perched on a rocky spur above the Freiberger Mulde river. Once one of the largest medieval fortifications in the Ore Mountains, it guarded a mountain pass and the border between Bohemian and Saxon territories for centuries.

The site captivates with its rugged mountain character - the rocky spur drops steeply to the west, offering fine views over the river valley and the surrounding Ore Mountain hills, especially beautiful in autumn colors. In winter, mist often wraps the ruins in a mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of old legends, while summer brings visitors eager to explore the history among the old walls, the palace building, and the defensive tower.

Interestingly, the keep that once stood on the rock was a favorite subject of Romantic-era painters before it was demolished - its stones are said to have been used to build the Lower Castle manor house at the foot of the hill.
