Perched on a narrow limestone crag above the Salzach valley near Hallein, the ruins of Gutrat Castle offer a rewarding short hike combined with a real sense of medieval history. It's a great pick for anyone wanting dramatic views without a long trek.

The castle sits at 622 m above sea level on a rock ridge running north to south, visible from far across the valley. The final approach follows a narrow rocky ridge, adding a touch of adventure to the walk. Views over the Salzach valley are especially striking in autumn and spring, when morning mist often drifts below the rocky outcrop, and the surrounding forest turns the trail into a peaceful escape in any season.

Built in the 13th century to protect nearby salt works and secure the Salzburg archbishop's control over the valley, the castle fell into ruin after the salt springs dried up — today only the palas, remains of the keep, and two forecourts survive.
