Kapuzinerberg is a city mountain in Salzburg, rising on the right bank of the Salzach river directly above the old town. It's a favourite spot for locals seeking a quick escape into greenery with sweeping views of Festung Hohensalzburg across the river.

Dense forest covers the slopes, offering welcome shade in summer and vibrant colours in autumn. From the summit and along the old fortress walls, you get lovely views over the rooftops of Salzburg's historic centre. Ravens nest in the cliffs on the north side, and a small colony of chamois roams the meadows, fed year-round by the city forester. Despite being minutes from the city centre, the mountain has a calm, almost rural feel.

How to reach the summit

• Steingasse (via the Imbergstiege steps) — easy, about 20-30 minutes
• Linzergasse (via the Franziskuspforte gate, passing the Calvary chapels) — easy
• Fürbergstraße, footpath behind the 'Im Berg' shopping centre — easy

Fun fact: the chamois colony descends from a single buck that wandered onto the mountain in 1948, and writer Stefan Zweig once lived in the Paschinger Schlössl villa on its slopes.
