Gaisberg is Salzburg's beloved local mountain - the easiest peak to reach near the city, rewarding visitors with sweeping views over the old town and the Berchtesgaden Alps. It has been a favourite excursion destination for over two centuries.

Part of the Osterhorngruppe within the Salzkammergut Mountains, Gaisberg forms the eastern edge of the Salzburg basin. Its summit is topped by a well-known transmission tower visible from afar. In summer, cyclists tackle the steep summit road as a training climb, while paragliders and hang gliders regularly launch from three take-off points just below the top, drifting down toward Aigen. In winter, sections of the trails become cross-country ski tracks, and ski tourers have rediscovered the mountain, including the old ski jump route known as the Nordschneise.

How to reach the summit

• Parsch (Salzburg) — follows part of the old cogwheel railway route, now shared with the road to Gaisberg, easy approach
• Bus line 151 from Mirabellplatz via Gnigl runs directly to the summit plateau

Practical information

• Parking on the summit plateau is officially limited to 55 spaces
• On certain days (e.g. 16 October) the road is closed to combustion-engine vehicles except for residents
• A memorial stone, the Weitwanderstein, marks the summit as a crossing point of three Austrian long-distance trails: Voralpenweg, Rupertiweg and Salzburger Mariazellerweg
• Near Judenbergalpe stands the historic Kobenzl hotel, closed since 2006 and awaiting redevelopment

The transmission mast on the summit is struck by lightning 40-50 times a year, making it one of Austria's most lightning-prone structures — which is why an international lightning research centre was once based here.
