If you like your historical sites with a touch of faded grandeur rather than glossy restoration, the Wesselényi Castle Ensemble in Jibou is worth the detour. This isn't a polished postcard castle - it's an authentic, slightly melancholic complex that still awaits its second life.

The ensemble includes the main palace, an English-style park, an old manor house from 1702, a riding hall, a greenhouse, a stable, and a family crypt tucked away on a nearby hill. Wandering through the former park, now partly transformed into a botanical garden, you get a real sense of an 18th-century noble estate, even though many original features were stripped away during the communist era. In summer, the greenery and the stone lions guarding the palace grounds make for a striking backdrop, while in winter the quiet, empty alleys add an extra layer of mystery.

Fun fact: the inscription commemorating the 1775 stable was only rediscovered recently after plaster fell away, revealing a horse carving attributed to the same sculptor who worked on the famous Bonțida castle.
