Neniska Velyka (1,815 m a.s.l.) is a striking summit in the Hutsul Alps, part of the Maramureș massif in the Ukrainian Carpathians — a wild, border-straddling peak where Ukrainian alpine meadows meet Romanian forests. If you want raw Carpathian scenery without the crowds, this is the place.

The summit sits precisely on the Ukrainian-Romanian border ridge, with its southern slopes descending into Romania. The landscape shifts dramatically with altitude: coniferous and beech forests cover the mountain up to around 1,400 m, above which open polonyny (alpine meadows) take over. The northern and southern flanks are steep, while the western and south-eastern slopes are gentler. Numerous streams rising near the summit feed the Shchaul and Leshets rivers below. Just 0.6 km to the west-southwest stands the sister peak Neniska Mala (1,818 m — actually slightly higher), and 2 km to the east lies Steavul (1,752 m). On a clear day, the highest peak of the Maramureș massif — Farkeu (1,961 m) in Romania — is visible to the south.

• Village of Bohdan (approx. 12 km north-northwest of the summit) — the nearest starting point, with trails leading through the Shchaul river valley; allow several hours; difficulty: moderate to demanding due to steep sections.

• The summit lies on the state border between Ukraine and Romania — access is only from the Ukrainian side; crossing the border at the summit is not permitted.
• The mountain is within the Maramureș Nature Reserve — reserve regulations apply throughout the area.

The name 'Neniska' comes from the local Hutsul dialect and simply means 'aunt' — a charmingly human touch to one of the Carpathians' most untamed ridges.
