The Zentralalpenweg 02 is one of Austria's longest and most ambitious long-distance trails - a 1168.6 km route crossing the entire country from the Danube lowlands to the Vorarlberg Alps. It's a journey through nearly every landscape the Austrian Alps have to offer, from gentle hills to glaciated high peaks.
The trail begins in Hainburg an der Donau and runs through Burgenland, Styria, Salzburg, Carinthia, Tyrol and finally to Feldkirch in Vorarlberg, with short stretches through Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Along the way hikers pass the Wechsel, the Gleinalpe, the Niedere Tauern, the Hohe Tauern (including Tappenkarsee and the Venedigerscharte, the highest point of the route), the Zillertal, Stubai and Ătztal Alps, and the RĂ€tikon. The trail is marked in red (#e53e3e) as well as Austria's standard red-white-red markers with the number 02. Completing the whole route takes roughly two to two and a half months.
Difficulty and terrainIt's one of the few trails in Europe letting you walk across an entire country on foot - from the Danube to the Swiss border, straight through the heart of the Central Alps.
