Yablunytsya Pass is one of the most accessible and rewarding viewpoints in the Ukrainian Carpathians. Sitting at 931 metres above sea level on the border of Zakarpattia and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, it offers an open panorama towards the Svydovets mountain range with the twin peaks of Blyznytsya on the horizon — a classic Hutsul landscape that never fails to impress.

The pass cuts through the Yablunytsya Ridge, marking the watershed between the Prut and Black Tysa rivers. Its slopes are draped in dense spruce forest, with scattered fir and Siberian pine adding texture, and open meadows framing the views. In summer the scene is lushly green and alive with hikers; autumn brings fiery colours to the ridges; in winter a thick blanket of snow gives the pass an almost Alpine atmosphere. A dedicated viewing platform lets you take in part of the town of Yasinya below and the sweeping Svydovets massif beyond.

How to reach the viewpoint

• From Yaremche and Nadvirna — national road H09 leads directly over the pass; accessible by car or bus, difficulty: easy, direct roadside access.
• From Rakhiv — the same H09 road from the south, equally convenient and open year-round.

Practical information

• The 'Berkut' guesthouse and restaurant operates at the pass — great for a warm meal and a rest stop.
• A lively Hutsul souvenir market is on-site — perfect for picking up handmade local crafts.
• The viewing platform is accessible directly from the roadside parking area.
• Best light for photography: morning and early afternoon, when mist lifts from the ridges.

The pass carries an older, more dramatic name — the Tatar Pass — recalling the 13th-century Mongol-Tatar invasion that swept through this very saddle on its way into western Europe. Few mountain crossings in the Carpathians carry such a vivid sense of history beneath their peaceful surface.
