Chomiak (1,542 m a.s.l.) is one of the most popular weekend hiking destinations in the Gorgany range of the Ukrainian Carpathians — a compact, roof-shaped sandstone summit that punches well above its weight when it comes to views and atmosphere. If you are looking for a rewarding day hike in this part of Ukraine, this is a great place to start.

The mountain takes you through a beautiful sequence of landscapes: dense mixed and coniferous forest on the lower slopes gives way to open alpine meadows and crooked-wood scrub, before the summit area opens up into rocky scree and boulder fields. The panorama from the top is genuinely impressive — to the northwest you can spot Syniak and Dovbushanka, Yavornyk lies to the north, and to the southeast, on a clear day, the entire Chornohora massif stretches out with Hoverla visible on the horizon. The valley of the Prut river sits roughly 700–800 m below, giving the mountain a sense of height that belies its modest elevation. In winter the slopes take on a more serious character and the scenery becomes strikingly dramatic.

• The main starting point is the Polianytsia area in the Prut valley — the trail climbs through forest, open meadows and rocky terrain to the summit; allow approximately 2–3 hours; moderate difficulty.

• The area around the mountain is officially designated as avalanche-prone. Warning signs are posted on the meadows below the summit. Exercise caution in winter and early spring, particularly on the north-facing slope — a fatal avalanche accident occurred here in spring 2010.
• A statue of the Virgin Mary stands on the summit, lit at night by solar panels installed in September 2018.

That solar-powered statue on the summit is a neat detail — installed in 2018, it was partly intended to promote the use of renewable energy in protected natural areas, making Chomiak a small symbol of green thinking in the Ukrainian mountains.
