Uzhok Pass is one of the most captivating spots in the Ukrainian Carpathians — a mountain crossing at 889 m above sea level where history, nature and a working railway converge in a single dramatic landscape. Whether you come for the panoramic views, the historic wartime cemetery or simply to watch a freight train snake through seven mountain tunnels, this pass will leave a lasting impression.

Sitting on the watershed between Galicia and Transcarpathia, the pass marks the divide between two great rivers: the San rises on its northern slopes, the Uzh on its southern side. The scenery is classic Eastern Beskyd — rounded, forested ridges, open highland meadows and deep river valleys. Autumn turns the mixed beech, spruce and fir forests into a blaze of gold and rust, while summer brings comfortable hiking temperatures and misty mornings that soften the distant ridgelines. During WWI Russian forces captured and lost this strategic pass multiple times in 1914 and 1915 — the military cemetery at the top is a moving reminder of those bitter mountain battles.
