Hidden away at 2017 m above sea level in the upper reaches of the Važecká Valley, Krivánske Green Lake is one of the High Tatras' most pristine alpine jewels — a place where wilderness truly means wilderness. With no marked trails leading to its shores, it remains beautifully untouched and wild.

The lake stretches roughly 450 by 160 metres, covers over 5 hectares and plunges to a depth of around 23 metres. It is flanked by the mighty massif of Kriváň to the northwest and the peak of Krátka to the northeast, creating a dramatic rocky amphitheatre. The water takes on a deep, luminous green hue — giving the lake its name — and on calm days mirrors the surrounding ridges with striking clarity. In summer the silence here is absolute, broken only by the wind; in autumn the dwarf pine and alpine grasses paint the slopes in warm golden tones.

• The Važecká Valley is a strictly protected zone within TANAP (Tatra National Park). There are currently no official hiking trails leading to the lake. A yellow trail that once branched off from the blue trail to Kriváň was closed in the early 1970s.

• The area is under strict nature protection — access without a permit is not allowed.
• A much smaller lake, known as Malý Staw Ważecki, lies a short distance to the southwest.

It is a rare thing in the Tatras to find a lake this size that has been returned entirely to nature — making Krivánske Green Lake a symbol of true alpine wilderness in the Slovak High Tatras.
