Starina Reservoir is the largest drinking water reservoir in Slovakia and one of the most significant freshwater sources in Central Europe. Tucked away in the Poloniny National Park at the far eastern tip of Slovakia, it offers a striking combination of vast blue waters, ancient beech forests and the serene atmosphere of the Carpathian wilderness. The reservoir stretches across more than 311 hectares, framed by the gentle ridges of the Bukovské vrchy hills. The landscape feels remote and wonderfully unspoiled — mornings bring mist rolling off the surrounding valleys, while autumn transforms the surrounding forests into a spectacular display of gold and crimson. The terrain around the reservoir is relatively flat, making it pleasant for a leisurely walk or a relaxed cycling trip along the valley. Before the valley was flooded, seven Rusyn villages — Dara, Ostrožnica, Ruské, Smolník, Starina, Veľká Poľana and Zvala — were resettled in the 1970s to make way for the reservoir, leaving behind a quietly haunting chapter of local history.
