Timmelsjoch is Austria's highest road border crossing and the only drivable pass across the main Alpine ridge between Reschen and Brenner. Sitting at 2474 m, it links the Austrian Ötztal valley with Italy's Passeier valley, making it one of the most spectacular mountain roads in the Alps.

The high alpine scenery here is dramatic - rugged slopes, glacier-formed terrain and sweeping views over the Ötztal and Stubai Alps. In summer the pass buzzes with motorcyclists, road cyclists and drivers chasing hairpin bends, while in winter it's completely closed and blanketed in snow. Along the route, striking concrete art installations tell the story of the region's nature, culture and history.

• From Untergurgl (Austria) - via the Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstraße, approx. 30 km, scenic road, accessible by car and motorcycle
• From St. Leonhard in Passeier (Italy) - via the SS 44 road, approx. 30 km with roughly 1800 m of elevation gain, a demanding climb for cyclists

• Road usually open mid-June to mid-October/early November, 7am to 8pm
• Toll road; closed to truck traffic
• The Timmelsjoch-Museum and the 'Timmelsjoch-Erfahrung' art stations are located along the pass
• Near Hochgurgl stands Europe's highest-altitude motorcycle museum (Top Mountain Motorcycle Museum)

The name Timmel is thought to derive from a Rhaeto-Romanic word for 'small hill', referencing the rounded glacial mounds still visible along the route today. Since 1982 the pass has been the legendary final climb of the Ötztaler Radmarathon cycling race.
