The Saidenbach Dam is one of those hidden gems where still water meets the rugged charm of the Ore Mountains. Built between 1929 and 1933 to supply drinking water to Chemnitz, this reservoir is today a favorite spot for peaceful walks and quiet fishing trips.

The landscape around the dam changes beautifully with the seasons — lush green forests reaching down to the shoreline in spring, deep blue water against rolling hills in summer, a blaze of color in autumn, and a hushed, snow-covered stillness in winter. The curved gravity dam itself, built from rough stone masonry using the Intze principle, is an impressive piece of engineering set against a backdrop of pure nature.

How to get there

• Lengefeld — access point to the dam, easy walk, suitable for all fitness levels
• Circular path around the reservoir — easy, family-friendly, following the shoreline with lake views throughout

Practical information

• Swimming and water sports are not allowed — the reservoir supplies drinking water
• Fishing is possible with the appropriate permit
• A public footpath crosses the top of the dam wall

Fun fact — the rocks on the eastern side of the reservoir are one of the few places in Germany where microscopic diamonds have been found, hidden inside garnets known as saidenbachites. The reservoir's sediment also gave its name to a newly discovered bacterium, Rhodoferax saidenbachensis.
