Lichtenberg Dam is a striking example of engineering set within the gentle hills of the Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge). This large rockfill dam holds back the waters of the Gimmlitz river, creating a reservoir that supplies drinking water to the region while also offering a peaceful destination for a countryside walk.

The area around the reservoir feels calm and green, with forested slopes framing the water and a walking trail circling the whole lake. In summer, the dam crest and surrounding paths are popular with walkers and cyclists enjoying the views, while autumn brings rich colours to the surrounding woods and winter lends the landscape a quiet, still atmosphere. Since the lake is a protected drinking water source, swimming and water sports are not permitted here — this is a place for scenery and slow walks rather than water-based activities.

How to get there

• Lichtenberg/Erzgebirge — easy walk to the dam crest, approx. 20-30 minutes
• Circular trail around the reservoir — easy to moderate, several hours depending on pace

Practical information

• The dam crest is open to the public, with old decommissioned valves on display
• Swimming and water sports are prohibited due to drinking water protection
• Fishing is permitted only for members of the Anglerverband Südsachsen
• A major renovation is underway from 2024/2025 - the reservoir has been drained and the dam crest may be fully closed to visitors during construction

Look out for the distinctive tower standing in the reservoir, used for water extraction and flood relief — a memorable landmark visible from the trail circling the lake.
