Falkenstein Dam is a quiet reservoir in Saxony's Vogtland region that transforms into a favorite summer swimming spot for locals and visitors alike. It's the kind of place where you can cool off in clean water and enjoy a relaxed walk surrounded by forested hills.

The landscape here is gentle and welcoming - low wooded hills wrap around the reservoir, creating an intimate, peaceful setting. In summer, the beach areas and swimming zones fill with families, while spring and autumn bring quieter walks along the shoreline with the water reflecting the changing colors of the trees. In winter, a light dusting of snow can make the dam crest walk especially scenic.

How to get there

• Falkenstein/Vogtland town center - short, easy walking trail, approx. 15-20 minutes
• Alternatively: drive to the parking area near the dam, then walk the loop trail around the reservoir

Practical information

• The reservoir is a certified EU bathing water site
• A separate, shallower pool near the dam's inlet serves as a children's swimming area
• Fishing is not worthwhile here - the water is too acidic and fish are almost absent
• The dam crest is open for walking, and a circular path leads all the way around the reservoir

Interestingly, the dam was built in the 1970s to supply industrial water, but since that industry no longer exists, it now serves purely for recreation and flood protection.
