Špilja Vrelo is a remarkable cave in the Gorski Kotar region, discovered by chance in 1950 during stone quarrying for the dam and road around Lake Bajer near Fužine. It stands out for its stunning cave formations and, uniquely, for being fully accessible to visitors of all abilities.
The cave stretches about 300 metres in total, with roughly 180 metres developed and open for tourists. Inside, you'll find beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, along with cave-dwelling spiders, moths and bats that hibernate here through the winter. During rainy periods, water rising from an underground spring can flood the entire cave, creating a dramatic and ever-changing underground scene.
How to get thereBeyond the tourist path lies a collapsed section around 500 metres long, blocked off according to some theories by water erosion, earthquakes or blasting work. Divers from Croatia and France have explored the cave's underground spring, adding to its mystery.
