Borecké Rocks form a small but strikingly beautiful sandstone rock city in the Bohemian Paradise, where instead of towering pillars you'll find fascinating weathering patterns - honeycombs, cavities, ledges, rock windows and rust-colored iron incrustations. It's a place where nature has spent millions of years carving a unique sculpture gallery into the stone.

The area is covered with pine forests, with gnarled dwarf pines and birches growing along the rock edges, giving the place an almost fairy-tale character - locally it's nicknamed the Fairy-tale Forest. In summer the undergrowth blooms with heather and bilberries, and the viewpoints along the rock rim open onto lovely panoramas of the surrounding Bohemian Paradise countryside. Spring and autumn bring a quiet, contemplative mood, perfect for an unhurried walk away from the crowds.

How to get there

• Rovensko pod Troskami - blue trail, approx. 1-1.5 hours, easy difficulty
• The blue trail continues onward towards the ruins of Trosky Castle

Practical information

• The site is a protected nature reserve - stay on marked paths and avoid damaging the vegetation
• Several caves can be found in the rocks, including Ludmila's Cave with Mesolithic archaeological finds
• Erosion around the viewpoints is a growing concern, so please tread carefully on the designated paths

Every spring a children's event called Fairy-tale Forest is held here, where kids meet storybook characters on a walk through the woods. The rocks are also a paradise for climbers - as early as 1977, 25 sandstone rock towers were documented here.
