The Pozheratulsky Reserve is a quiet, wild corner of the Ukrainian Carpathians on the slopes of Mount Pozheratul and Lysyna Kosmatska, protecting one of the last breeding grounds of the capercaillie - a shy forest bird vanishing across much of Europe. It's a place for travelers who want genuine wilderness rather than crowded trails.

The landscape is dominated by 130-150 year old coniferous forest mixed with birch and rowan, with a lush undergrowth of blueberries, lingonberries and clubmosses. In summer the forest hums with birdsong, autumn brings rich color contrasts from the rowan berries, and winter transforms the slopes into a silent realm crossed by the tracks of red deer, roe deer and even brown bear. To the east, the reserve borders the Hutsulshchyna National Nature Park, reinforcing the sense of untouched wilderness.

How to get there

• Mykulychyn (Nadvirna district) — local trail, approx. 3-4 hours, moderate difficulty
• Kosmach (Kosiv district) — approach from the southeast, terrain requires good orientation skills

Practical information

• Protected as a breeding ground for capercaillie — stay quiet and keep to marked paths during spring mating season
• Managed by the Delyatyn State Forestry (Polianytsia forest district)
• Covers 206 ha, protected status since 1974

This remains one of the few places in the Ukrainian Carpathians where the capercaillie still performs its dramatic spring courtship display, a sight increasingly rare across Europe.
