Brebeneskul (2038 m) is one of the highest peaks of the Chornohora ridge in the Ukrainian Carpathians, and it holds a remarkable distinction: just below its broad, dome-shaped summit lies Brebeneskul Lake — the highest alpine lake in Ukraine. If you are exploring Chornohora, this peak simply cannot be missed.
The summit area is a classic high-Carpathian landscape — gently rounded, carpeted with alpine and subalpine meadows, and scattered with boulder fields shaped by ancient glaciers and frost weathering. On a clear day the ridge walk connects you visually with neighbouring peaks: Menchul (1998 m) to the southeast and Rebra (2001 m) to the northwest. Summer brings wildflowers and sweeping green panoramas; autumn turns the grasslands golden; winter leaves the summit under deep snow for months.
How to reach the summit- From Mt Munchel — red trail, approx. 1 hr up / 1 hr down, easy.
- From the village of Bystrets via the ruins of a shelter on Maryshevska glade and Mt Shpytsi to the 'Pod Rebramy (1930 m)' post, then red trail via Rebra — green + red trail, 7.5 hrs up / 6.5 hrs down, demanding.
- From the Zaroslyak mountain base (best reached from Vorokhta village) to Lake Nesamovyte, then red trail via Rebra — yellow + red trail, 5.5 hrs up / 4.5 hrs down, moderate.
- From Mt Turkul via Rebra — red trail, approx. 2 hrs up / 2 hrs down, easy.
- From Hoverla village via the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve checkpoint and Turkulska glade, then red trail from the foot of Mt Turkul via Rebra — blue + red trail, approx. 5 hrs up / 4 hrs down, moderate.
- From Hoverla village via the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve checkpoint, then yellow trail via Brebenyaska glade and Brebeneskul Lake — blue + yellow trail, approx. 7 hrs up / 6 hrs down, moderate.
Practical information- Several approach routes pass through the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve — an entry fee is collected at the checkpoint.
- The nearest settlement is the village of Bystrets (Ivano-Frankivsk region).
- Brebeneskul Lake, situated just west of the summit, is the highest lake in Ukraine and the source of the Brebeneskul River.
