Nižné Volie pliesko is a small, quiet tarn above Zadná poľana in the Mlynická dolina valley - the only one lying west of the main hiking trail. It's a lovely spot for those who want to step away from the crowds and enjoy a peaceful moment beside one of the High Tatras' most scenic valleys.
The surroundings have a raw, alpine character - a small pool of water tucked into rocky terrain creates an intimate atmosphere quite different from the larger, better-known Tatra tarns. From here you get a fine view of the Satan ridge in the Hrebeň bášt (Bastion Ridge), which alone makes the climb worthwhile. In the second half of the 19th century, shepherds from Štrba used to graze their flocks on Zadná poľana near these tarns - a peaceful detail that adds a bit of history to the walk.
How to get thereSince this is the only tarn in the area located off the main path, keep an eye on the route while approaching it. The reward is a view you won't get from the standard trail.
