Hidden in the heart of the Šumava region, Velká Niva is a wild and wonderfully untouched floodplain mire that feels like stepping into another world. Ancient boggy spruce forests and rare bog pine stands line the quiet stream of Olšinka — a place where nature truly runs the show.

The reserve's landscape is defined by its vast peatland, waterlogged spruce forests and distinctive bog pine (borovice blatka) groves — a rare glacial relic that makes this spot unique in Central Europe. In spring the area comes alive with birdsong and awakening wetland flora; summer brings lush, deep greens and the earthy scent of peat; autumn transforms the mosses and grasses into a tapestry of russet and gold; winter blankets everything in silence and snow. The atmosphere is raw and primeval — this is one of the last true wilderness corners of Bohemia.

• Lenora (roadside parking near route I/39) — walk to the reserve boundary, easy to moderate difficulty. The reserve lies between the Lenora–Volare road and the path towards Milešice.
• Volare (approx. 5 km to the east) — alternative starting point for a longer circular walk in the area.

• The reserve is part of the Šumava European Site of Community Importance (EVL Šumava) — keep strictly to marked paths.
• Access to the core zone may be restricted — check current rules with the administrator: Správa NP a CHKO Šumava.
• The terrain is wet and boggy year-round — waterproof footwear is essential.

The bog pine population protected here is considered a living relic of the last Ice Age — a remarkable reminder of how dramatically this landscape has endured through millennia.
