Haidel (1,166 m a.s.l.) is one of the most rewarding viewpoints in the Bavarian Forest — a forested summit crowned by a striking wooden observation tower that, on a clear day, offers views stretching all the way to the Alps. Whether you are a casual day-tripper or a keen hiker, this peak delivers a memorable experience without demanding technical skills.

The summit forms a broad, gentle ridge covered in dense woodland. The atmosphere shifts beautifully through the seasons: spring brings fresh resin-scented air, summer offers cool shade beneath the canopy, autumn sets the hillsides ablaze with colour, and winter drapes everything in snow for a truly magical feel. From the observation platform — perched over 30 metres above the ground — you enjoy a full 360-degree panorama across the rolling hills of the Bavarian Forest, the Bohemian Šumava across the border, and the distant Alpine chain on the southern horizon.

• The 35-metre observation tower is built from Douglas fir and larch wood — climb 159 steps to reach the platform at 30.33 m.
• A separate 60-metre steel transmission tower belonging to Deutsche Telekom stands nearby and is visible from afar.

In the Middle Ages the ancient salt-trading route known as the Prachatitzer Steig — one of the famous 'Goldene Steige' — crossed this very ridge, connecting Passau with the Bohemian town of Prachatice. It is a quiet reminder that these forested hills were once busy trading corridors between Bavaria and Bohemia.
